Romulan Weapons and Systems
Plasma Bolt
Launchers (PBLs) - From FT Fleet Book 2
used by the Phalons. The PBL fires a big
ball of plasma every other turn placed before movement
up to 30mu away with a strength equal to the weapon
class. Plasma Bolts may be targeted like a fighter
group and strength reduced when hit. The PBL explodes
after weapons fire and damges all ships within 6mu with
current strength of the Bolt x D6 damage.
Screens can reduced the effect. See Fleet Book
2 for a full description.
Cloaking Field - From the More Thrust
supplement, Cloaking must be included as a movement
order when it is to happen. Cloaked ships may not
fire PBLs or any other weapon. The rules in MT have
you take the mini off the table and for an amount of
turns you indicate, movement plotting is done and when
the turn to appear happens, perform the movement orders
from the last known spot and see where the ship is now
and play as normal. Here is an alternative that may
fit the source material (Balance of Terror episode)
better: The cloaked miniatures stays on the table but
may not be fired upon until Targeted. To find a
cloaked ship, opponent must use a fire con to spot the
ship, this fire con can not be used to target this or
any other ship in the firing phase. Roll a d6 for each
fire con dedicated to finding the cloaked ship and read
as regular beam dice and hits totaled. If the result is
0 hits, can not target cloaked ship. 1 'hit', can target
cloaked ship but attacks resolved as if 200% actual
range. 2+ 'hits', target but resolved as if 150% actual range.
Once a cloaked ship
is targeted and hit by weapons, other ships do not need
to perform the targeting rolls but attacks are still
resolved with the increased % of range modifiers. TMP Era cloaks are more
effective so the d6 results are determined as if there
were Level 1 screens.
Romulan TMP Era
Notes:
We never get to see Motion Picture era Romulans though
the Klingon's 'Bird of Prey' in Search for Spock was designed with
Romulan influences. Star Trek Starship Tactical Combat Simulator
rules include the Bird of Prey
variants in the Romulan fleets too but I have left them out of my Romulan
designs shown here. There
is a real lack of Fan Designs for the Romulans so as a result, FASAs
STSTCS is my source for TMP designs. I
have the 'Wing' type ships that don't have the classic
TOS Bird or Prey look as the TMP Era Romulan ships. The Wing Of Vengeance is actually a
very early design in
STSTCS but it does not fit the look of the other TOS ships I have this
as an
updated version of that ship to fit this era.
They still include the Cloaking Field but they do have higher thrust
across the board with most ships having
Thrust 6. The Plasma
weapons are back and hull values are
still weak but with a higher percentage of hull but no
armor. Some of the STSTCS designs used photon torpedoes and
not big plasma weapons, but I didn't go with that, these all have big balls
of plasma.

The final wave of Klingon ships obtainted by the Romulans were K'Tinga
versions fully stripped down and required much more effort to refit. As a
result it is still very similar to the KR in some ways but the exterior
details were modified to a Romulan aesthetic. |
