  The
Stardate: 3000 line
of miniatures is produced by
Valiant
Enterprises Ltd. who have been producing these and other
gaming and display miniatures since the 1970's and these
starship miniatures are still available. This line of
starships
were never tied to a specific game system but pictures of
the miniatures were used for the counters of the old game
Alpha Omega.
"Warfare
on the Milky Way The bitter struggle between
the outnumbered forces of the United Planetary Federation
and those of the Alien Star Empire began with the Alien
Invasion of Federation territory in SD 3021.7 and has lasted
eight long years. No end is yet in sight."
Alien Star Empire
Background
"The Alien Star Empire is the largest and most
formidable alien force that inhabitants of the Federation
have ever encountered. Although the Empire is
nominally a Confederation, it is in fact ruled by the
Zanthorians. Over a period of many years they have
extended their borders beyond the limits of the Zanthor
star system to the point where they now control the better
part of the third quadrant of the Milky Way. The
military forces at their disposal are vast and while the
Zanthorians themselves are essentially humanoid, their
ships are manned by a crew from all corners of their
Empire, encompassing at lease a dozen distinctly different
types of beings."
Design Philosophy -
Screened nimble graser ships
Weak-average hulls, Screens
on all ships, No armor, Grasers as the only weapons
and are fewer in number and all firing foreward,
carriers with fighters are just starting to be used,
weak PDS
coverage, advanced drives with average thrust.

The pursuit ships (scouts, intercepters, and
assault ships) are designed to fulfill roles similar
to those performed by aircraft, submarines , and
patrol craft in a modern naval fleet. They are the
only craft in the STARDATE: 3000 series capable of
landing or operating in an atmosphere. Their range
is short compared to capital ships, which means they
operate in waves from their tenders or return
frequently to a mother ship for refueling.

The scouts are
the smallest of the pursuit ships and are
designed to form a flexible screen around the
task force as it moves through space, with the
dual task of seeking out enemy and warning of
any sudden enemy approach. Their offensive
weaponry is limited being designed more to
eliminate enemy scouts than to destroy or
disable capital ships.

The interceptors are the general purpose craft of the fleet.
They can be used in small groups to intercept and destroy
marauding enemy scouts, or in larger groups attack capital ships.
They can also be used effectively as long range scouts.

The role of the POLLUX
is different than the Federation's fleet support
ship. Alien pursuit ships do have their own
FTL so there is no need to transport them from
system to system. Alien pursuit ships are
intended for short endurance missions so when the
mission needs to be extended, the POLLUX is there
to keep those ships and crew suplied and ready for
battle. The POLLUX can dock and transport
pursuit ships to other systems if needed but that
is not the primary purpose.
