South
African Confederation (SAC) Fleet
Miniatures from Brigade
Models
This article offers a set of unofficial Full Thrust
stats for Brigade Models' SAC starship minis. I've used them mostly
as a Pan-African Union subfleet, the product of an outworld colonial
shipyard that began producing a small range of home-built designs as the
First Xeno War made it more and more difficult to purchase secondhand hulls
from other powers. An earlier version
of this article was up on the defunct Battle Works Studios site a few
years back, but most of the designs have been revised based on playtesting
and new ones have been added as the model range grew.
The smaller ships are fairly mundane designs, although they feature high
thrust ratings overall. The larger hulls are a bit slower and rely on a
mix of beam and missile firepower. Their torpedo destroyer design is
something of an anomaly with its big pulse torpedoes, and is intended
for operations against large, heavily-screened targets rather than for
the kind of independent patrol and skirmishing duties most navies'
destroyers are employed for. Many of their ships are rather light on
point defense, which is compensated for by heavier Beam-1 armament and a
very specialized escort cruiser design.

Devilray Class Lancer
TMF 16
NPV 57 / CPV 44
Hull 2 (1/1/0/0) - 1 CU in last box
Thrust 8
FTL
1 Fire Control
1 Class 2 Beam Battery (F/FS/FP)
1 Class 1 Beam Battery (All Arcs)
2 Submunition Packs (F)
|
Small, fast, and painfully fragile, the Devilray
class has an unfortunate reputation as a fire magnet, rarely
surviving long against any enemy aware of their comparatively heavy
armament. Their crews often attempt to use their very powerful engines
to skirt the battle and approach from unexpected angles, and only
the bravest will attempt to close to optimal range before loosing their
submunition packs.

|
Oryx Class Frigate
TMF 24
NPV 81 / CPV 63
Armor 1
Hull 6 (2/2/1/1) - 2 CU, one every 3rd box
Thrust 6
FTL
1 Fire Control
1 PDS
3 Class 2 Beam Batteries (1 x F/FS/FP, 1 x F/FP/AP, 1 x F/FS/AS)
|
A well-armed but otherwise average frigate design,
the Oryx is primarily used for either convoy escort duty or to intercept
and hunt down enemy strikeboats and lancers before they can reach the
heavier ships in the fleet. |
|
Bantu Class Torpedo Destroyer
TMF 31
NPV 105 / CPV 84
Armor 1
Hull 7 (2/2/2/1) - 2 CU, one every 4th box
Thrust 6
FTL
1 Fire Control
1 PDS
2 Pulse Torpedoes (2 x F)
1 Class 1 Beam Battery (All Arcs)
|
A specialized destroyer design optimized for delivering
massed pulse torpedo fire against key targets at long range, the Bantu is a
somewhat controversial class. Their strong performance against
screened targets is offset by the narrow firing arcs of her primary weapons,
which makes them very poor at the kind of close-in brawls escorts usually
specialize in.

|
Kashana Class Fleet Destroyer
TMF 34
NPV 116 / CPV 94
Armor 1
Hull 10 (3/3/2/2) - 2 CU, one every 5th box
Thrust 4
FTL
1 Fire Control
1 PDS
1 Salvo Missile Rack (1 x F/FS/FP)
2 Class 2 Beam Batteries (1 x F/FS/AS, 1 x F/FP/AP)
3 Class 1 Beam Batteries (3 x All Arcs)
|
Built to accompany the heavier capital ships of battle line,
the Kashana combines an effective beam array with a hard-hitting one-shot
salvo missile rack. The primary drawback of the class is its
modest thrust rating, which limits its usefulness in patrol, strike,
and interception missions.
|
|
Umgeni Class Light Cruiser
TMF 44
NPV 148 / CPV 123
Armor 1
Hull 11 (3/3/3/2) - 3 CU, one every 4th box
Thrust 6
FTL
1 Fire Control
1 PDS
2 Salvo Missile Racks (2 x F/FS/FP)
1 Class 2 Beam Battery (1 x F/FS/FP)
3 Class 1 Beam Batteries (3 x All Arcs)
|
An inexpensive light cruiser design optimized for fast
strike missions and contributing to fleet-level missile strikes, the Umgeni
often finds itself assigned as a task force leaders for groups of Devilrays,
Oryx, and Bantus. High thrust ratings and emphasis on expendable
munitions actually leads to an excellent survival record for the class,
making them popular ships to serve on - which is compounded by her
unusually comfortable crew accommodations.

|
Oshana Class Escort Cruiser
TMF 74
NPV 248 / CPV 229
Armor 1
Hull 23 (6/6/6/5) - 4 CU, one every 6th box
Thrust 6
FTL
1 Fire Control
2 ADFCs
10 PDS
1 Class 2 Beam Battery (1 x F/FS/FP)
4 Class 1 Beam Batteries (4 x All Arcs)
|
The Oshana class escort cruiser is a dedicated fleet
defense design, providing excellent area defense capability on a durable
hull fitted with high-mobility drive systems. Equally adept at
supporting heavier battle line ships, guarding carriers, or supporting
vulnerable strike groups, Oshanas are some of the most
widely-deployed ships in the fleet.
|
|
Tshwane Class Heavy Cruiser
TMF 82
NPV 276/ CPV 261
Armor 1
Hull 29 (8/7/7/7) - 5 CU, one every 6th box
Thrust 4
FTL
2 Fire Controls
1 PDS
2 Salvo Missile Launchers (2 x F/FS/FP)
Single 8 Mass Magazine
1 Class 3 Beam Battery (1 x F/FS/AS/FP/AP)
1 Class 2 Beam Battery (1 x F/FS/FP)
1 Class 1 Beam Battery (1 x All Arcs)
|
Smallest of the battle line ships, the Tshwane heavy cruiser
carries a mix of beam batteries and salvo missile
systems on a tough but unmaneuverable hull.
Compared to true capital ships her beam fit is relatively light and her
magazine space limited, but she contributes significant missile throw
weight to any fleet while her ammunition holds
out. Squadrons of heavy cruisers are almost never deployed
without Oshana escort cruisers for area defense support - the Tshwane's
own point defense array is uncommonly weak.
|
|
Assegai Class Battlecruiser
TMF 124
NPV 461 / CPV 491
Armor 3
Advanced Hull 34 (12/11/11) - 7 CU, one every 5th box
Thrust 4
FTL
3 Fire Controls
1 ADFC
5 PDS
2 Pulse Torpedoes (2 x F)
4 Class 3 Beam Batteries (2 x F/FS/AS/FP/AP, 1 x F/FS/AS, 1 x F/FP/AP)
2 Class 2 Beam Batteries (2 x F/FS/FP)
|
The Assegai is a cutting edge design incorporating the
newest damage control technology coupled with advanced construction
techniques. Unlike other capital ships in the fleet, they sport
an all-energy weapon armament and integral area defense capability, making
them better at independent operations and at mutual support against missile
and fighter strikes. A very expensive class, but quite strong at
long-range sniping.
|
|
Isandlwana Class Battleship
TMF 124
NPV 422 / CPV 452
Armor 3
Hull 37 (10/9/9/9) - 7 CU, one every 6th box
Thrust 4
FTL
3 Fire Controls
2 PDS
2 Salvo Missile Launchers (2 x F/FS/FP)
Single 14 Mass Magazine
2 Class 3 Beam Batteries (2 x F/FS/AS/FP/AP)
2 Class 2 Beam Batteries (2 x F/FS/FP)
2 Class 1 Beam Batteries (2 x All Arcs)
|
Big brother to the Tshwane heavy cruiser design, the
Isandlwana class sports more beams, larger missile magazines, and a
more durable hull to take advantage of both. These battleships
often load one salvo per launcher of extended-range missiles in place
of conventional ammunition, giving them a potent first-strike capability.

|
Drakenberg Class Light Carrier &
Petrel Fighters
TMF 92
NPV 310 + fighters / CPV 237 + fighters
Armor 1
Average Hull 33 (9/8/8/8) - 5 CU, one every 7th box
Thrust 4
FTL
1 Fire Control
1 ADFC
4 PDS
2 Hanger Bays
2 Class 2 Beam Batteries (2 x F/FS/FP)
2 Class 1 Beam Batteries (4 x All Arcs)
|
The Drakenberg is the smaller of the two common carrier
classes deployed by the fleet, with a limited hanger capacity and modest
offensive firepower. Widely used to provide fighter cover for small
task forces, they also serve as backups for the heavier Mafadi class in
larger formations.
|
|
Mafadi Class Strike Carrier & Petrel
Fighters
TMF 132
NPV 452 + fighters / CPV 340 + fighters
Armor 1
Average Hull 39 (10/10/10/9) - 7 CU, one every 6th box
Thrust 4
FTL
1 Fire Control
1 ADFC
6 PDS
4 Hanger Bays
2 Class 2 Beam Batteries (2 x F/FS/FP)
4 Class 1 Beam Batteries (4 x All Arcs)
|
The Mafadi is the largest carrier platform in the fleet,
with spacious hanger bays and a strong secondary role as an area defense
ship. Like many carriers her anti-ship weaponry is rather limited, but
her brood of Petrel multirole fighters makes up for that inadequacy.
